Detailed Description:

This is a temporary, part-time position (30 hours per week) for the academic year 2021-22, with a possibility of renewal through the rest of the calendar year 2022. The anticipated end date of this position is December 31, 2022 with the possibility of renewing through June 2023. The new colleague will split their time between day-to-day tasks associated with professional maintenance and stewardship the David W. May Collection–approximately 2500 objects–and assisting the Provost’s Office of the University with its larger legal and ethical responsibilities related to its compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (1990, aka NAGPRA).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides primary assistance with everyday operations of the David W. May Collection and its associated gallery and storage space, including object movement, conservation protocols, and installation of works of art
  • Assists with cataloguing and updating of May collections (using TMS software to create new object records according to established standards; edit existing records; and develop photographic documentation as needed)
  • Develops future project/s of own initiative for online/May Gallery public display
  • Works with outside consultants and tribal representatives to review May Collection and other university collection holdings to identify any ancestral remains as yet undiscovered, particularly funerary objects, or cultural patrimony that conceivably might be covered by NAGPRA legislation
  • Prepares and reviews inventories and public notifications in compliance with both US Federal (NAGPRA) and California State (CalNAGPRA) laws
  • Serves as primary institutional liaison to tribal representatives through communications and by providing access to any relevant cultural resources at USD
  • Serves on internal/external working groups and committees, including occasional grant writing, as assigned by the Director of University Galleries
