Description

The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University seeks to hire a qualified Anthropological Collections Archivist to manage archival materials housed in the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository. Duties include the development of standards, policies, and procedures for the arrangement, tracking, description, and preservation of archival materials to ensure their proper care, access, and use in perpetuity. Anthropological collections housed at the Repository include materials collected by faculty of the former Department of Anthropology, materials donated to the Repository by private individuals, and materials collected during Federally sponsored cultural resource management projects. Associated archival materials are therefore an important resource for collection management,
research, and ongoing Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) processes.

Essential Duties

  • Works with the Curator of Collections to develop and implement archival standards, policies, and practices
  • Participates in the processing, arrangement, inventorying, preservation, and rehousing of archival materials
  • Creates preliminary inventory of archival material and descriptive text for the collections database and other finding aides
  • Works with other collections staff to develop data management procedures for archival materials
  • Accessions newly acquired and existing archival materials
  • Creates and enters accession records to ensure timely and accurate recording of items
  • Evaluates physical condition of archival materials during processing and works with the Curator of Collections and Collections Manager to create plans for appropriate handling, housing, and/or conservation treatments
  • Acts as a liaison to file, retrieve, and fulfill requests for items within the archive
  • Facilitate access to archives for students, researchers, descendant communities, and other stakeholders
  • Participate in the NAGPRA process as needed
  • Provide monthly updates of archival activities
  • Supervise archival activities of student workers and other staff
